Physical therapy aims to improve movement and mobility in persons with compromised physical functioning.
Often, persons who undergo physical therapy have experienced a decrease in quality of life as a result of physical impairments or functional limitations caused by disease or injury. Individuals who often are in need of physical therapy include those with back pain, elderly persons with arthritis or balance problems, injured athletes, infants with developmental disabilities, and persons who have had severe burns, strokes, or spinal cord injuries. Persons whose endurance for movement is affected by heart or lung problems or other illnesses are also helped by exercise and education to build activity tolerance and improve muscle strength and efficiency of movement during functional activities. Individuals with limb deficiencies are taught to use prosthetic replacement devices. Here at First point physical therapy and rehabilitation services inc, we pride ourselves as providing excellent care to improve function in all our patients
The goal of occupational therapy is to improve the skills that are needed to live life as independently as possible. This includes being able to take care of yourself and to work, for example – as well as being able to leave your home and meet other people.
Occupational therapy can help you to cope with a (new) mental or physical limitation and manage better in everyday life. This can improve your quality of life and health. Family members can also get useful tips and advice from an occupational therapist.
Depending on the type of limitation and your personal circumstances, occupational therapy may include the following:
Re-training of everyday skills (getting dressed, preparing food, managing the household)
Learning and practicing skills for school, work or free time
Movement and perception exercises
Concentration and memory exercises
Help in structuring your daily routine
Modification of your home or workplace
Using medical aids such as a walker or prosthesis
Advice and, if needed, guidance for family members
Here at First point physical therapy and rehabilitation services inc, we pride ourselves as providing excellent care to improve function in all our patients.
Speech therapy is treatment that helps improve your speech and language skills. It helps with early language skills, voice and sound production, comprehension, fluency, clarity and expression.
Speech therapy is beneficial for children and adults with communication disorders. It can also help people with hearing impairments or those who have difficulty swallowing. Your healthcare provider may recommend speech therapy to help with:
Aphasia. People with aphasia can have difficulty reading, writing, speaking and understanding language. The condition can develop when areas of your brain that process language are damaged by stroke or injury.
Apraxia. People with apraxia know what they want to say, but have trouble forming the words. They may have trouble with reading, writing, swallowing or other motor skills.
Articulation disorders. Children with articulation disorders are unable to produce certain word sounds. For example, they may substitute one sound for another — like saying “wed” instead of “red” or “thith” instead of “this.” Early intervention speech therapy can help with articulation disorders.
Cognitive-communication disorders. When the area of your brain that controls your thinking ability is damaged, it can result in difficulty communicating. People with cognitive-communication disorders may have issues with listening, speaking, memory and problem-solving.
